The leader of the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, who was arrested two days in Cotonou, Benin Republic has been released. Mr. Dokubo was released after President Goodluck Jonathan personally intervened on his behalf with the Beninoise President Yayi Boni. Festus Keyamo, a civil rights activist and personal attorney to Mr. Dokubo confirmed his release. Dokubo, who once bragged openly that his arrest will lead to the demise of Nigeria spent 36 hours with the Beninoise gendarmes before his release around 1 AM Nigerian time yesterday. UPDATE ON ASUU: Federal Government gives ASUU 1 week ultimatum to call off strike

There was a press briefing in Abuja this morning, when the acting Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike told journalist that the Federal Government has given the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) one week ultimatum to call off the ongoing strike. ASUU execs and President Jonathan were supposed to meet this week but the meeting is yet to hold. The ASUU strike began July 1, almost 5 months later, no resolution in sight. The FG also said any Academic staff who fails to resume on or before December 4th automatically ceases to be a staff of the institution. Pro-chancellors of the various universities and the National Universities Commissions (NUC) have been directed to ensure compliance of this directive.

Presidency Intervenes In Dokubo-Asari’s Arrest

President Goodluck Jonathan is believed to have intervened in the arrest, Tuesday, of Alhaji Muhajeed Dokubo-Asari by the government of Republic of Benin. Presidency sources told Daily Independent on Wednesday that the president had sought for details of why Dokubo-Asari was taken in by the Benin Republic gendarmes through the Nigerian Ambassador to that country. The FCT Police Command on Monday in Abuja confirmed that gunmen fired shots at the car of the Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah in Abuja. The spokesperson of the command, Altine Daniel, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the incident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Friday. She added that the minister was not in the car when the incident took place. The NEC members, who gathered at the Bayero University, Kano, penultimate week to review the reports of the various university congresses over the strike, suspended the meeting following the death of Dr. Festus Iyayi. Monarch burnt to death after arsonists set palace ablaze

The 80 year old monarch of Ilase-Ijesa community in Obokun local government area of Osun State was killed in a fire on Wednesday night November 20th after hoodlums set his palace on fire. The Alase of Ilase-Ijesa, Oba Adesina Anibijuwon, was burnt to death inside his palace around 8pm Wednesday though there are reports that he was strangled before his home was set on fire. Residents of the community claim the late Oba, who had been blind for nine years, was attacked by suspected members of Odua People's Congress who invaded the palace that night in a Mazda 323 car which they later set ablaze. The charred remains of the late Oba Anibijuwon was taken to the mortuary at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Osogbo. The police is investigating his death.
