Deputy Director of the State Security Service, Ms. Marilyn Ogar, on Sunday confirmed that 21 persons died during the exchange of gunfire that followed an attempted jailbreak at the Asokoro headquarters of the service in Abuja on Sunday. In her third statement on Sunday on the incident, Ogar did not give the identities of the casualties. She said 18 casualties were recorded, adding that two SSS operatives were injured. She did not indicate whether 18 who died were inmates or not. She, however, said three detainees, who sustained gunshots injuries, later died. Ogar said, “Following our earlier releases, it has been established that 18 casualties were recorded, while two service personnel sustained serious injuries. Three other detainees who sustained gunshot injuries during the incident have also died.” The SSS spokesperson said investigation was still ongoing to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the incident. -Punch

Abeokuta, capital of Ogun state in western Nigeria has witnessed yet another horror: the beheading of a 65- year old retired magistrate, Mrs Olufunmilayo Timeyin by her domestic aide, simply identified as David. The tragedy happened at the Laderin Housing Estate, Kobape Road, barely 48 hours after an insane police corporal killed seven people and subsequently committed suicide in the same Abeokuta. A witness told journalists at the scene of the incident that it happened at about 4:00. p.m. in the deceased's house. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Timeyin, who retired as a senior magistrate in the Ogun state judiciary, employed the domestic aide about two months ago. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) yesterday arrested a 34 years old man with 120 grammes of heroin hidden in his anus at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA) Lagos. The suspect, Mr. Ulelu Ugwumba Michael was apprehended during the screening of passengers on Qatar airline flight on his way from Pakistan. Speaking on the arrest, NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar said that the suspect was arrested with the drug through the aid of a scanning machine used by officers of the anti-narcotics agency. Mr. Umar further noted that the suspect inserted two wraps of brownish powdery substance found to be heroin into his anus on his way from Pakistan. Police in Georgia have arrested an 18-year-old man who they say spent about $25,000 that a bank accidentally deposited into his account. Steven Fields, of Hull, turned himself in Friday. He faces a charge of theft by taking. The Madison County Sheriff's Department says a teller at a bank in Hull mistakenly deposited a check for approximately $31,000 into the wrong account. According to investigators, Mr Fields wasted no time going on a massive shopping spree, with stops at a car dealership, a variety of stores and a fast-food restaurant. Authorities say there was an effort to come to an agreement between Fields and the bank, and that Fields eventually said he couldn't repay the money. The 18-year-old, who graduated from high school last year, has an account with the Athens branch of First Citizens Bank. For seven days, Port Harcourt-based radio presenter Anthony Akatakpo, popularly known as Diplomatic Akas Baba, was the unwilling 'guest' of a band of kidnappers that stormed his home about two weeks ago. Not only did Akatakpo's abductors shoot him in the leg before taking him away, they threatened to kill him if his wife failed to pay them a ransom of N10m. But thankfully, Akas Baba was eventually released by his abductors although they did not get the money as demanded.
